It’s back! And it still has a nose for space! It’s the Titanium Shuttle from the Forgotten Space Program, previously posted on KerbalX at https://kerbalx.com/CydonianMonk/Titanium and now updated to take advantage of all the newest whizbangery in Kerbal Space Program version 1.4.5+.

The most important changes are to the fuel system and the nose tank ejection process. Thanks to fuel flow priority, I can set the tanks in the nose tank assembly to drain first while leaving the rear tanks active. Once the nose tank is at 0% fuel (you’ll need to keep an eye on this yourself) it can be discarded in grand fashion - and while at 100% throttle!

The reaction control system was rebalanced, and updated to disable firing thrusters that aren’t pointing in the direction you just told the ship to go. Now it’s much easier to dock to the not-quite-at-center-of-mass inline docking port! And maybe you’ll save some monoprop while you’re at it.

The launch profile is still relatively painless. With a thrust-to-weight ratio of only 1.2 it’s slow off the pad, so keep it vertical until you’re above 120m/s surface speed. Afterwards you can bank gradually until you’re at a 45 degree angle of attack at roughly 12,000km altitude. From there just do what feels natural to reach your desired orbit.

Reentry safety has improved thanks to tweaks made to the game’s thermal systems. I’ve not had any issues with the cockpit overheating and exploding while doing a direct reentry without the broad s-turns, which were previously required to bleed off excess heat.

Once you’re safely on the ground enjoy your all new, highly-recoverable, still mostly-reusable Titanium Nose Shuttle! Now with more sepratrons and less spacetape!

The Titanium Shuttle from Forgotten Space Program, updated for KSP v1.4.5. Stage to discard the nose tank when it’s empty!

by: Cydonian Monk

This craft achieves limited reusability by returning the important parts of itself to Kerbin, discarding only the empty nose tank. The 4 Juno jet engines provide some atmospheric flight capability during the landing phase, allowing you to fly back to the nearest runway if you miss it.

Check the action groups before launch! You may also find it helpful to disable fuel flow from the two tanks at the rear of the shuttle until the nose tank is empty.
