The F-35 Lighting II, an American manufactured single seat and engine fighter by Lockheed Martin with the role of being a stealth multirole combat aircraft. It adds to the United States roster of 5th generation fighters as well as the nations who have purchased the fighter.

The B variant or F-35B is designed to meet the needs of the United States Marine Corps which is being a short takeoff and vertical landing or STOVL. This is due to the USMC operating with smaller carriers that are more akin to helicopter carriers. The F-35B is of course capable of vertical takeoff, but would require little to no payload and reduced fuel load which is impracticle.

A major advantage to the F-35B is the Rolls-Royce LiftSystem which mechanically links the lift fan to the single main engine allowing cool downwards thrust to be created which reduces damage down to carrier decks.
