CSX 8888 was an EMD SD40-2 that ran away from its engineer.
8888 had 47 freigh cars, 22 of them were full. Two of them were loaded with molten phenol - a oxic ingredient glues, paints, and dyes.
8888 left K12 and the conductor radioed the engineer to stop. There was no reply. The engineer noticed that there was a misaligned switch, and decided to jump off the train to switch the tracks. Before leaving the cab, the engineer applied the airbrakes and attempted to apply the dynamic brakes but failed to do so. He then set the throttle to full throttle. If the dynamic brakes were engaged, the train would’ve slowed down a lot. However, without the dynamic brakes, this caused 8888 to accelerate. The engineer switched the tracks and attempted to board the accelerating train but it was already going too fast.
8888, now a runaway, accelerated into the main line. 8888 was now proceeding southward toward the Toledo branch.
A switch was aligned to a siding where a portable derail was placed, but CSX 8888 threw it clear from the tracks as it sped on. Local police then attempted to shoot the fuel shutoff button with a load of buckshot, which failed.
A few locals attempted to jump onto he locomotive, but chickened out after noticing that the train was going way too fast.
Meanwhile, northbound train Q63615 was directed into a siding in Dunkirk, OH where they were ordered to uncouple their cargo from theier engine, SD40-2 8392 and wait until 8888 passed their location.
At 1405, the runaway roared past 8392 - the chase was on. After the switches were realigned, 8392 chased after 8888.
8392 couples up to 8888 at Kenton, going 51MPH. 8392 carefully applied the dynamic brakes, hoping that the couplings would hold. 8888 slows down to 11MPH.
CSX trainmaster John Hopsfield climbs aboard to shutdown the engines and finally, the crazy 8’s comes to a stop after its 60 mile journey.
Fun fact: This replica is made with exactly 888 parts.
