Description
The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is an American military aerial refueling aircraft that developed from the Boeing 367-80 prototype, alongside the Boeing 707 airliner. It is the predominant variant of the C-135 Stratolifter family of transport aircraft. The KC-135 was the United States Air Force’s first jet-powered refueling tanker and replaced the KC-97 Stratofreighter. The KC-135 was initially tasked with refueling strategic bombers, but it was used extensively in the Vietnam War and later conflicts such as Operation Desert Storm to extend the range and endurance of US tactical fighters and bombers.
The KC-135 entered service with the USAF in 1957; it is one of nine military fixed-wing aircraft with over 60 years of continuous service with its original operator. The KC-135 is supplemented by the larger McDonnell Douglas KC-10 Extender. Studies have concluded that many of the aircraft could be flown until 2030, although maintenance costs have greatly increased. The KC-135 is to be partially replaced by the Boeing KC-46 Pegasus.
Popular culture along with its great reputation have given it, along with others, the name: the Flying Gas Station.
However, the Stratotanker is most known for that name.
This KSP recreation allows for the same general capabilities of the real deal, although the tail boom cannot move from side to side. Only up and down. There is also a separate robotic joint at the end of the boom to allow for the docking port to acquire the angle of the refueling port on any approaching aircraft that is low on fuel. Do take care to practice with this though, one wrong move and you can send the tanker to the ground, so try to match the speed and direction of the Stratotanker, basically like you would do trying to dock in space, just be a lot more gentle and precise.
A mod aircraft called KC-135 Stratotanker. Built with 236 of the finest parts, its root part is airbuscockpit.
Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.5.1.
