Description
The Grumman X-29, nicknamed the Polecat, was an American experimental aircraft (X-plane, if you will) that tested a forward-swept wing, canard control surfaces, and other novel aircraft technologies. The X-29 was developed by Grumman, and the two aircraft built were flown by NASA and the United States Air Force. The aerodynamic instability of the X-29’s airframe required the use of computerized fly-by-wire control. Composite materials were used to control the aeroelastic divergent twisting experienced by forward-swept wings, and to reduce weight. The aircraft first flew in 1984, and two X-29s were flight tested
through 1991.
The X-29 is considered to be a frankenstein
aircraft, with the fuselage of an F-5 Freedom Fighter, and an engine from an F-18 Hornet.
The first X-29 is on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force on Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, Ohio. The other is displayed at the Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards AFB.
This KSP recreation of the X-29 is, unlike the real thing, incredibly stable. Supermaneuverable, even. This X-29 recreation is based off of the first of the two, which had no spin-recovery chute. In the event you stall, keep the nose up and point the nose where you want the plane to go. Use the afterburner (AG1) if you have to.
As this aircraft is very maneuverable, try to fly it under the large bridge at the Research & Development complex. Do be careful, though, many scientists may be working on dangerous experiments. Also, the bridge is typically filled with Kerbals wanting to watch a plane fly underneath their feet, so try not to strike it.
If you want, put BDA weapons on the X-29 and see how well it performs in a dogfight.
A mod aircraft called Grumman X-29. Built with 73 of the finest parts, its root part is Mark2Cockpit.
Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.5.1.
