  • Professor Phineas Kerbenstein’s wonderous vertical propulsion emporium.

Using Professor Lloyd Kerman’s steam ball to generate steam literally on the fly has turned out to be incredibly efficient. A relatively small, single stack rocket with water, whale oil and dephlogisticated air reservoirs has a total of some 14,700 knots of velocity change available. Granted, it takes about half of that to get into orbit but, as Robert Kerman says, once in orbit you are half way to anywhere.¨¨The challenge is in fuel management. The generator’s steam reservoir holds about 6 seconds worth of steam at full power but can only replace that at two-thirds of the rate it expends. That means 10 seconds at full thrust but then it drops to two-thirds thrust. That is all well and good but once you begin coasting along the ballistic arc into orbit, the reservoir begins to fill up again. Unfortunately, once the reservoir has refilled, there is no automatic governor to tell the generator to stop producing steam and any extra is vented as thrustless waste. A craft that, theoretically has the energy to travel from Kerbin orbit to Munar orbit and back twice might waste so much as to barely have enough for one trip.¨¨Only run the generator when the engine is also running or you are carefully watching the reservoir. Do not fill the reservoir to capacity.

A mod rocket called Steam Dynamo No.3 (TL4). Built with 20 of the finest parts, its root part is DomePod.

Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.0.2.
