The Zond program was a series of spacecraft for moon flybys. The first few were unmanned probes but there were to be some manned missions as well. The program was plagued with problem and so cosmonauts never made it to the moon. Here in KSP, the Zond can quite easily make it to Munar or Minmus orbit and back. Also useful for rescuing those Kerbals stuck in Munar or Minmus orbit.
A mod rocket called Soyuz 7K-L1 Zond. Built with 55 of the finest parts, its root part is Tantares.Crew.A.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.0.4.
The lunar transfer stage has plenty of delta-V to get to the Mun and even to orbit but you don’t necessarily want to leave it cluttering up space. I typically set my transmunar trajectory for a surface impact. Then I turn the craft retrograde and stage. The force of the decoupler raises the periapsis of the crewed module enough (usually about 30 or 40km) so that it won’t impact the Mun while the transmunar stage is sure to crash.

Don't forget, people build craft at all skill levels, just 'cos something is 'newbish' doesn't mean it needs hatin'.
