The large scientific satellite that the Chief Designer wanted to be first into orbit but the Space Race heating up wouldn’t allow it. This was flown later as Sputnik 3, and crashed. Maybe you will do better.

A mod rocket called Obyekt D. Built with 77 of the finest parts, its root part is Hamal.Control.B.

Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.0.4.

The R7 booster is over powered for getting this satellite into orbit. I reduced the thrust by a quarter to make it a little more scaled for flight above Kerbin. My advice is to strip off the strap-on boosters, dial up the thrust and slap on some tail fins. That configuration should fly this into orbit just fine.

Object D was a fairly large satellite with a number of geophysical experiments aboard and was supposed to be the Soviet’s first satellite into orbit. A triumph of science and engineering. However, with the Space Race heating up, it was decided that getting there first was more important than doing any science once they got there. The metal sphere and radio going beep that was Sputnik 1 won that race.

Seven months later, Object D became known as Sputnik 3. Unfortunately, vibrations caused the strap-on boosters to detach from the R7 launcher 97 seconds into the flight. Amazingly, the satellite mostly survived the crash to Earth 224 km away from the launch. It was an electrical short and fire that destroyed the satellite rather than the impact.

A few weeks later, a backup launcher and satellite was launched successfully. It was also called Sputnik 3, as if the previous failure had never happened.
