NOTE
Due to the changes to wheels in 1.1, for now, you should turn wheel traction off and toggle it with 3, so that you can get traction back while landing.
Ascent plan
To take off with just the R.A.P.I.E.R.s, press x-space-1-z. (This was a decision to make the craft truly single stage in both design and staging.)
Note: While this is by no means the most efficient flight plan, it works pretty well, is easy enough to do and gets you into orbit with about ~2000 dV
- Take off with just the RAPIERs, pitch up slowly at the end of the runway.
When you start to lose speed, toggle the NERVAs on and pitch up a bit more, making sure you at least maintain speed.
At around 7000 metres (8500 in 1.1.x), level out, keep the NERVAs on until you hit ~400 m/s
Switch the NERVAs off and accelerate with the RAPIERs until you hit ~800 m/s
Switch them back on and begin to angle the craft up.
When the jets burn out and switch to closed cycle mode, angle up sharply to get a nice boost until they burn out.
Keep burning as sharply upwards as you can without losing speed, the NERVAs will heat up and get close to overheating, this is normal. Hit 2 to extend the radiators when you get out of the atmosphere to alleviate the heating issue. (For some reason, this does not occur in 1.1.x, so don’t worry about it)
Circularize as normal.
Congrats! You’re orbital!
Overview
This craft was designed as an omni-purpose spaceplane, able to get to the Mün and Minmus (as of April 17, 2016, my first Minmus landing).
It can be flown in space or in atmospheres and doesn’t require a crew, allowing it to run rescue duties, all while able to refuel itself from anywhere thanks to the ISRU unit and full size drill.
Refuelling on Minmus leaves it with ~4800 dV in Minmus orbit, letting you use this as a point wherein you can take the SSTO craft interplanetary. (Such as my first time on Ike as of April 30, 2016. Which led to a Duna landing May 1st, 2016 and subsequent return to Kerbin on May 2nd, 2016)
Description
Slightly Dangerous SSTO - Hayha¨¨Named for the famed Finnish Sniper Simo H¤yh¤, this craft was designed to be an attractive omni-purpose light jet/spaceplane. Equipped with a docking port, full RCS control, and a probe core, this craft can serve many different purposes and has been flown successfully to the M¼n. Convert-o-tron 125 and large drill included for refuelling from any area from the Mun or Minmus for interplanetary travel.¨¨-Toggle the NERVAs to maintain speed while you get to the 7000m / 400m/s point, but only for short bursts to conserve fuel. Leave the NERVAs on once you get to about 800m/s. ¨-Pitch up gradually to maintain speed while the jets burn out, note that when they burn out, pitch up at a higher angle of attack to make use of the short RAPIER rocket burst of thrust.¨¨1 - Toggle NERVA engines.¨2 - Toggle drill, radiators.
A pretty, stock (As of 1.1) interplanetary aircraft known as Slightly Dangerous - Hayha.
Built with 91 slightly dangerous parts, its root part is mk2CargoBayS.
Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.0.5.
