A missile with a man in it

The F-104 Starfighter is a Mach 2 capable air superiority fighter. The dartlike jet imagined by Kelly Johnson. Lockheed was challenged to make a air superiority fighter. When Kelly Johnson asked fighter pilots what they needed they said that a fast and simple aircraft so he delivered with the F-104. The F 104 is a 54 foot long fuselage but a tiny 21 foot wingspan. Because of unreliability issues it got retired from the USAF, but latter fell in favor with fourteen NATO countries. Now the F-104 is used as a NASA test bed in many of NASA’s high speed experiments.
