On December 3, 2003 in Washington D.C., during its Falcon protovehicle
unveiling ceremonies, Elon Musk announced that SpaceX planned to follow-up Falcon (thereafter called Falcon 1
) with a more powerful 3.7 meter diameter launch vehicle named Falcon 5
that would be capable of hauling 4.2 tonnes to low earth orbit (LEO) and 1.25 tonnes to geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO). Falcon 5 launches would be priced at $12 million.
