MEK-5 - Interplanetary Tug

The MEK-5 is the companion craft to the Orpheus 2. It flies it and a crew of four to Eve, recovers its return module, and flies back to Kerbin.

Like Orpheus 2, MEK-5 is optimised for ease of use, fun, and a bit of role-playing rather than raw efficiency. There is plenty of dV to allow for less than perfect manoeuvres, contingencies, or other creative stuff, and enough TWR to make the transfer burns tolerable.

Note that an engineer is required to complete the Orpheus 2 mission to Eve and back.

Mission profile

  1. Launch to LKO, RV with Orpheus 2, dock with it.
  2. Transfer to equatorial low Eve orbit.
  3. Fly Orpheus 2 down to Eve’s surface, leaving the pilot and engineer on board. Note that the cargo container under the door of the command module can stow the jetpacks of both Orpheus 2 crew members.
  4. While Orpheus 2 is on the surface, have the engineer perform an EVA to install a Docking Port Jr (stowed in the cargo container) on top of the Docking Port.
  5. After Orpheus 2’s return module is back in orbit, RV and dock with it.
  6. Have the Orpheus 2 crew pick up their jetpacks and return to the craft via EVA.
  7. Fly back to low Kerbin orbit and recover the crew, science, and Orpheus 2 return module using your favourite recovery method.

Action groups:

  1. Deploy solar panels and antenna.

A stock rocket called MEK-5. Built with 74 of the finest parts, its root part is crewCabin.
