Description

You ever have one of those days when you thought, this is a pretty good day, but what it really needs is a flying boat? The Brikoleur has got you covered. The Long Umpire is a flying boat. It lands on water, and takes off from water. Land, too, but water is more fun. It won’t go to orbit, but why would you want to take a flying boat to orbit anyway? It’s a boat! That flies!

There’s also a handy cargo bay for cargo. With a ramp, because it’s unlikely you could deliver anything much to water from above, besides which the engines get in the way of opening it that way. You could replace it with passenger modules. And there’s a ladder in case the pilot needs to go for a refreshing dip.

Anyway, to ditch, descend to 50 m, slow down to 100 m/s, cut engines, and set everything to straight and level. That’s it. If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can flare up a tiny bit at 4 m or so, but it’ll forgive you if you come down a bit nose first or a bit tail first.

To take off, hit full power, wiggle your wings to get the under-wing floats out of the water, keep your nose pointed at the horizon until you’re going around 55-60 m/s, then pull back. Easy-peasy!

(If somebody finds a practical use for this, let me know. It’s a ton of fun to fly though.)
