Description
Another variant of the Electric Flea concept. KER reports about 5000 dV as displayed here. In reality it’s a good deal more because it doesn’t account for the Oscar draining. I don’t think it will quite break the 6k barrier, but it’s close.
This adds a RTG and reduces the LfOx/Xe ratio. The fuel cells are sufficient to keep the Dawn burning at half-power indefinitely or on full power for a quite a while, but we only need a long burn once: when we first land (and take off, if necessary). The idea is that the fuel cells are only used when needed, and normally the craft lands to recharge its batteries from the RTG. This lets us carry less LfOx.
If you ran the numbers/did enough experiments in the field, I’m sure you could reduce the amount of LfOx further. A back-of-the-envelope reckoning suggests that a third-full Oscar ought to give about 1500-2000 m/s worth of fuel cell backed power, which should be more than enough to land and take off.
A stock lander called EF5k. Built with 21 of the finest parts, its root part is probeCoreOcto2.
Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.3.1.
