Landing Gear does not lock, so don’t do that, also decoupling drop tank or bombs is not advisable.

The corsair was one of the first fighters that flew with the new R-2800 Twin Wasp, and one of the first single engine fighters to break 400mph. You can see the design choices Vought made to get that speed, The fuselage is closely cowled to the engine and remains around the same diameter to it until the cockpit This also means that you can’t exactly place the necessary oil cooling and intakes in the fuselage like in the 47 and F6F less to increase the fuselage cross section of the plane. Instead they placed the oil coolers in the wings of the plane, which they could do due to the relatively fatter wings navy planes used.

The gull wings have a myriad of purposes, one common reason is to make the landing gear reach the ground with the big prop, however given that the corsair only has like 1-2 inches greater prop diameter compared to the Hellcat or Thunderbolt, it’s not a great answer to the question of why. With gull wings, the fuselage can more organically connect to the fuselage which reduces drag, and allows for a shorter landing gear which makes it stronger and also allows the gear to be extended in a Dive Break mode which can be used in excess of 400mph.

The corsair while meant to be a carrier plane was not used on US carriers early on because of problems with landings, mainly with the lack of visibility of the deck on landings. It was relegated to the Marines and even then it was still competitive with land based fighters. Thanks to the British, who used corsairs with their carriers more than Hellcats or Seafires. By approaching the carrier in a curve they where able to see the LSO and deck for far longer on approach. This put the corsairs back on US carriers later in the war.

The corsairs stayed on carries until the end of the war and stayed even into Korea. It lasted longer than even the F8F Bearcat, a supposed replacement for the Hellcats and Corsairs.
