The Duna Skimmer is an early attempt at making flying and mapping Duna feasible. The Moth Tug is a simple, mostly reusable craft to get the plane into a high orbit. Once on Duna, the Duna Skimmer is quite at home and able to change direction at a whim due to its unique water-skimmer stance. Aircraft landings in thin atmosphere are made dangerous by high stall speeds. The Duna Skimmer is equipped with vertical thrusters that can be tuned depending on the fuel load. On board is a small rover for further exploration. Coupled with this craft’s relatively large delta-v, stable wing pattern, and quad landing gear, exploring Duna should be a breeze.
Enable the motors on the wheels of the rover once dropped. When re-loading the rover, position the rover under the plane, retract the plane’s gear with the cargo bay open, then turn on the reaction wheel on the rover and get the docking port close to the ship’s docking port. In low gravity, the attraction of the docking ports will finish the process. Exit rover, board plane, and skim away.
