Description

Airborne Surface Exploration Vehicle (ASEV) I made for exploring Eve. It is VTOL capable on both Eve and Kerbin and the wings can be folded to fit snugly inside a 3.75m fairing.

Flight mode transition is controlled by a KAL-1000 part on the right side, which controls main wing rotation, stabilizer movement (shifts center of lift), and fan blade pitch angle along a single axis. Rotor power is bound to main throttle.

Flight mode axis:
0-4 VTOL/hover mode
4-6 Transition
6-10 Horizontal flight mode

Something to be aware of:
If the rotors are anything less than exactly parallel in horizontal flight, it will produce a pitching torque that SAS seems to have trouble with. This can happen if aero-forces at speed push the wings forward or backward. I deal with it by setting the forward elevon on the tail stabilizers to deploy and adjusting their authority (sort of a manual trim). You can also adjust the target angle on the hinges to straighten the wings, but the trim method seems to work better.

Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.9.1.
