The Boeing 727-100 is a response to airliners crying out for a medium haul airliner to serve hot-and-high routes. Some wanted a quadjet like the Boeing 707, and some wanted a twinjet (like the Boeing 737), so Boeing went for 3 engines to make as many airlines angry as possible. The 3 engined 727 gave enough thrust (HA!) to serve regional airports with smaller runways. Across the pond, the Hawker Siddeley Trident was under development as well, so they cooperated on the development of the aircrafts, but Boeing pulls a sneaky and steals valuable information on building a good trijet from the Trident project and applied it to the Boeing 727. And guess what, the airlines liked it, despite early on, its bizarre flight characteristics caused many crashes, but pilots eventually learnt about the characteristics of the aircraft and planes stoped crashing.

The Boeing 727-100 became the lesser version of the 727 family as many more airlines ordered the Boeing 727-200 and friends (like the combi and freight version). However, Boeing 727s are still in use today, as it had great short-field capability, and allowed such a large airliner to land at smaller airports while still being able to carry so many people. The Boeing 727s in use today are now all freighters, as they are not limited to age restrictions, so many of the retired Boeing 727s had been converted to freighter versions still in use today by multiple cargo airlines.
