F3D-1 Skyknight

.
.
The F3D was an American twin jet, naval fighter developed as a night fighter by the Douglas Aircraft Company. The aircraft was designed and built shortly after World War II and combined the new, promising, technology of the jet engine with a fully functioning air to air radar. The aircraft was somewhat revolutionary as the jet engine provided a large amount of thrust to carry the large radar. Other radar guided night fighters had been used but they where very large and heavy. The aircraft was armed with only guns and was somewhat quickly made obsolete by the advent of smaller radars, faster aircraft, and air to air missiles. The aircraft was although, crucial in the development of radar guided missiles such as the AiM-7 sparrow. Although a short life, the aircraft was used in the early stages of Korea and scored many air to air kills with only one loss.
