F-4E
Phantom II
The F-4
In the early 1950s, McDonnell Douglass did a study on which branch of the US military would most likely need a new aircraft. They came up with a new idea for a large attack fighter based off the F3H Demon. To do this they upped the power plant to a dual engine configuration and revised the body shaping. They then approached the Navy with the F3H-G/H Super Demon
design. The Navy liked the design but didn’t feel a need for more fighters as they already had designs coming into service. This caused the Navy to request a redesign into a new, all-weather fighter-bomber. In the redesign process the weight and drag shot up as well as an increase in thrust. The hard points and carrying capacity also went up and the cockpit went from one to two seats in a tandem configuration. The resulting aircraft was the XF4H-1. The F-4 was finalized and ordered for production in 1960 and the first arrived in 1961. The aircraft would prove quite capable and would be converted for use by the US Air force and Marines. Along with American service the aircraft was heavily exported and used by many nations and still used by some today. The newest update was by Israel for Turkey in the form of Terminator
2020.

Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.8.1.
The F-4E Variant
The aircraft was rather good but its main problem was the lack of a primary armament in that it didn’t have a cannon. This was because it was decided that the aircraft should be able to rely on air to air missiles which, while somewhat proven, were not ideal in some circumstances. This caused problems and F-4s quickly defaulted to always carrying a gun pod in an underbelly mount. This caused unnecessary drag and it was decided that in the next variant produced they should add an internal gun. This would become the F-4E and included an extended nose to accommodate the new Vulcan 20mm mount.
