The F-16XL was a derivative of the F-16 Fighting Falcon developed by General Dynamics. The XL took the body of the F-16 and elongated it to make space for a double delta wing. The result was entered into the United States Air Force, Enhanced Tactical Fighter (ETF) competition against the future F-15 Eagle. The competition eventually won and the F-16XL was confined to the sidelines. After the competition the XL was given to NASA who used it for laminar flow research.
