F-16C:
.
.
Background:
.
In the late 1960s, a group of officers known simply as the fighter mafia
initiated a program for the United States Air Force called the Lightweight Fighter Program or LWF. This program was a manifestation of this groups beliefs in how a fighter should be designed, lightweight, cheap, maneuverable, and specialised. The aircraft would have to be less than half the weight of the F-15 Eagle, have a high TWR, and be relatively maneuverable. Two designs would be submitted, the Northrop YF-17, which would later become the Navy’s F/A-18 Hornet, and the General Dynamics YF-16. Somewhat ironically, the YF-16 became the very thing the fighter mafia sought to destroy, multirole. This occurred after prospects of sales to other countries caused them to switch the competition requirements to suit all branches.

The Aircraft:
.
The F-16 was a step back from other aircraft of the time in that it only has one engine. This was a result of the weight requirements of the LWF competition as one engine meant less weight. This design caused it to evolve a unique shape, as it was to have a bubble canopy that had good visibility everywhere. The combination of these factors led the designers to put the intake below the cockpit, giving the fighter its unique silhouette. The aircraft is quite tall for a modern jet and is prone to tipping over with its narrow landing gear base. The relatively simple wing layout consists of a trapezoidal wing, full moving horizontal stab, and a swept tail fin. The aircraft comes with air brakes on either side of the engine nozzle that provide more than enough drag to slow down.
