E Class rock wrangler - Extra Extra Large

The day has come. An E Class Asteroid in the neighborhood of 1,000 tons is on an impact course with Kerbin and it must be stopped. Moving an object so large at the end of our Advanced Grabbing Units (AGU or Claw) required a whole new design from the Roid Grabber XL and R&D isn’t even sure this will work as they don’t know how massive the asteroids can get.

The Roid Grabber XXL is KSC’s attempt move the largest and most threatening objects in space. Built around four Rhino engines in a pulling tug configuration, it should be able to divert and maybe capture the largest asteroids. With an estimated asteroid mass of 1,000 tons it should have nearly 670dV and at 2,000tons, 370dV. It’s equipped with eight full size ISRU converters and a two seat command pod for two of our bravest astronauts for on site engineering. Should they not be able to divert the impact in time, they are on hand to mine and jettison as much mass from the asteroid as possible. R&D optimistically mounted a Docking Port Sr. to the top in case they wanted to dock the XXL, roid and all, to the KSS. However, the fore solar panels will need to be retracted to fit. Because this craft uses the new Vernor Engine RCS blister, it only requires Lf+Ox and the converters are set to start and stop Lf+Ox automatically (Hit 4) with drill harvest activation.

Notes:

For maneuvering: Use Control from here from the docking port. The command pod and probe core are set to face the AGU, opposite the engines direction.

For initial grapple: Have the Claw grip a peak that puts the asteroid as far away from the engine wash as possible. Testing didn’t show any problems with a flat face, but I really can’t be sure for all cases.

For maneuvers after grapple: Autostrut the asteroid to root and it’s recommended to autostrutt the engines and docking port to Heaviest to lock down the roid for maneuvering. Limiting engine gimbals can also help.

I ran a few simulations with a E class spawned around the Mun, but until the fateful day arrives in my career save, I don’t know if this will actually work.
