Safe, yet fun orbital bombardment
The Lawn Dart is a two part craft designed for reentry of large asteroids. The main body of the Dart features a claw to attach the tail, chutes and steering fins. The tip of the Dart is stored on the back, and is used to mount an inflatable heat shield to the front of the rock for thermal protection and a uniform nose for reentry. The Dart is equipped with RCS, but deorbiting and other major maneuvers need to be assisted by a tug such as the NEMETTE, docking at the tail. It is designed so the NEMETTE can mount forwards or backwards, to pull or push the asteroid as needed and then detach to make corrective burns to stay in orbit. The fine tuning is then done by the Dart’s RCS for a reentry path to land near KSC.
The Dart has an integral fairing, however, it is only used to mount to a launch vehicle’s decoupler. Without mounting to a decoupler, seperator, docking port or some other removable piece, the fairing truss will not disappear on staging. This will block the main body claw and render it useless. A 3.75m fairing is needed to encapsulate the tail fins, the Joolian Ib is usually used to launch the Dart to the KSS for asteroid retrieval. If a new NEMETTE is to be launched with the Lawn Dart, place it between the tail docking port and the inflatable heatshield, the JIb can still be used to lift this optional package.
Lawn Dart must be mounted to a Decoupler or other self removing part, see below:
Built with 147 of the finest parts, its root part is probeStackSmall.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.2.2.
