Joolian IV - 275t to LKO w/ recovery of 3rd stage

The second largest in the Jool series launch vehicles allows payloads of up to 275t to reach orbit at 150,000km above Kerbin. The central core is fitted with a probe controller and parachutes for recovery. Delicate packages can be shielded from drag without modifying the payload, thanks to the integrated 3.75m fairing. The fairing base houses the recovery core and SAS wheels under the decoupler if no extra fairing protection is necessary.

The 4 outer cores are asparagus staged through fuel flow priority and coupler crossfeeed. The North and South facing cores drop away first, to facilitate an Eastward(90 degrees) gravity turn without rotation in lower atmosphere.

The Joolian IV is the most commonly used launch vehicle in the program. Originally targeting 250t to LKO, it was found that it could easily deliver an extra 25 tons of mass and still have fuel left for the recovery burn. At this stage, the JIV and JIII are the most common lifters utilized as the KSS and other large infrastructure projects head to every body in the Kerbin system. A larger Joolian V has been recently finalized for production, taking the throne of largest payload to orbit. The JIV is expected to remain the most commonly used booster in the near future as no payloads utilizing the superheavy lift of the JV are planned at this time.
