Description

A conversion kit to convert a lightweight asteroid into an airplane to impress and amaze your neighbors.

Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.7.3.

Your very own Flying Asteroid?

Are you looking to impress your neighbors, or just want to show of in front of your girlfriend by flying around on a giant piece of stone that was never made for flying?
AHTech Industries has you covered, with our:

Flying Rock Kit

Our new conversion kit to transform a boring old piece of space rock into a fabulous flying work of art. Asteroid not included, some assembly required, warranty void if fairing is damaged or deployed. This all in one package includes everything you need: from the (recoverable) booster to get you into low Kerbin orbit, the orbital maneuvering engine to rendezvous with an asteroid of your choice, detachable parts for the nose, wings, tailplane, and landing gear, to enough fuel to safely deorbit the assembled plane.
What do you want to fly today?

Usage notes

AHTech recommends to use a low-mass asteroid for conversion. Launch and rendezvous with the chosen asteroid is fairly standard. The suggested assembly order is to first attach the nosecone-to-be to the asteroid, thus establishing a firm connection between the conversion kit and the asteroid. Then attach the two wings, one after the other. Take care to a) attach the wings so that the solar panels will be on the top of the wings during normal operation and b) that the wings are as good aligned with each other and the nosecone. The tailplane needs to be attached to the asteroid with similar care. It is suggested to attach the landing gear assembly last. If some fine-adjustments are needed that require pivoting around one of the Klaws, then it might be needed to remove some of the autostruts to allow for free movement.
The electric rotor engines are delivered in locked configuration. This needs to be unlocked before powered flight can commence. As the engine controls are mapped to the same inputs as RCS, it is recommended to unlock the rotors only after assembly is finished and RCS is no longer needed. AHTech Industries is not liable for any accidents that may happen if proper procedure is not followed.
To keep it from veering off the runway during takeoff you probably have to adjust the friction control of the landing gear. You’ll probably also need to get off the edge of the runway to be able to pitch up.

The flight controls follow the AHTech standard:
The blade pitch (authority limiter) is controlled with the up / down translation controls (I / K)
The rotor torque limit is controlled with the forward / backward translation controls (H / N)

User statements:

  • It flies like a wet sack of bricks! (Jebediah Kerman)
  • Well, I guess the best you can say about it is that it does fly (Valentina Kerman)
  • OMG! You’ll never get me onto that thing! (Bob Kerman)
  • How the *beep* do you keep this *beeping* piece of *beep* straight on the *beeping* runway? (Winfried Kerman)
